Katelyn, Volunteer since 2018
(Occupational Therapy Student)

“As an Occupational Therapy Student with a passion for children, Heroes Academy (HA) provided me with an opportunity to gain practical experience working with children with additional needs and enabled me to further develop my skills. Not only has HA provided me a pathway to obtain my required CPD hours for university, but I have been able to network with other allied health professionals. I love giving back to my community, and HA has enabled me to do that, supporting families of children with additional needs.

“At HA, I have helped with multiple aspects of running Mega Play Dates. I volunteer my time mid-week in the lead up to events helping with the backend of event planning, recruiting other allied health university students as well as volunteering in key roles such as volunteer coordinator, program coordinator and in an event coordination role to ensure a smooth and fun event.

“HA has such a special place in my heart. Seeing the children’s faces light up when they arrive brings me so much joy. The genuine ‘thankyou‘’s you receive at the end of an event from parents, as well as the children asking excitedly when the next event is, is so special and rewarding.”

Tash, Volunteer since 2018
(Mum of kids with additional needs)

“HA is way for me to give back. My two kids have Autism/ADHD/PDA and I have not forgotten what it is like to be isolated and not fit in anywhere. HA is a place where I can share what I have experienced & learnt with my kids over the years — to help others in our team & community to love and value these kids for who they are, no matter their differences.

“I volunteer in many different areas — I help kids with challenging behaviours, run the Program room at Mega Play Dates, help with Playgroup and help behind the scenes set up/pack up, artwork and socials.

“I love being a part of this team and seeing so many volunteers who want to learn more about additional needs and support these kids and their families. I love seeing the joy on the kids’ faces when they join our programs, and the parents after some child free time.”

Jess, Volunteer since 2019
(Mum of three children)

“I saw it as an opportunity to learn more about children with disabilities. I want my children to also learn to be compassionate, kind and patient when they encounter other children with additional needs in their world.

“When I volunteer at a Mega Play Date, I get assigned a child and get briefed some information about them. Then I try to get to know them and ways they like to communicate with me. I try to encourage them to join in the program when they can and just play with them.

“Volunteering at HA has blessed me more than I could imagine. Through Heroes I have witnessed how big God’s love is and how He has a plan for each of the Heroes and their families.”

Angela, Volunteer since 2019
(Additional needs Education Assistant)

“I volunteered for Mega Dates as my Dad and sister have signed up to volunteer for the Mega Play Dates and I thought I would put my name down as well so that I could spend time with kids who may also have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).

It has really blessed me blessing the kids and families in our community, who have also been living with additional needs. I like seeing kids happy and relaxed parents. I also work with kids with complex needs and volunteering with HA and helped me in my professional life also.”

Rebekah, Volunteer since 2022
(Young adult with additional needs)

“As soon as I heard about the HA I was excited to assist not only the child on a one-to-one basis but to help the parents have time together, this to me is especially important. I love that I get to assist the child in my care to experience the freedom to choose the activities we have on offer.

“I also learn from the children but believe God has given me a gift to help nurture children with a disability not only as an Education Assistant in the school system but also through HA.”
